Updated: Dec 5, 2023

Hey there! Are you ready to get your sew on? Sewing is such a rewarding and enjoyable skill to have, whether you're using it as a fun hobby or you want to create your own unique and fabulous clothes. Of course, having the right supplies is key to making your sewing dreams a reality.

So, in this blog post, we're going to dive into all the essential supplies you'll need to get started with basic sewing. From thread to needles to fabric and beyond, we've got you covered! Plus, we'll share some of our favorite tips and tricks to help you along the way.

Cozy up in your favorite spot, grab your cup of tea, and let's get ready to start your sewing journey together!

1. Sewing machine: A sewing machine is the most important tool for sewing. There are many different types of sewing machines available, but a basic machine with straight and zigzag stitches is sufficient for most beginner projects. You'd be amazed with what you can create with just these two stitches alone.

2. Thread: A spool of thread is essential for sewing. Choose a high-quality thread that

closely matches the color of your fabric, for a seamless look. Or of course, you could use a contrasting thread for

emphasis. Thread comes in a variety of materials such as cotton, polyester, and silk, so be sure to choose the appropriate one for your project. A good rule of thumb, when in doubt use 100% polyester thread. It's durable, versatile, and comes in various shades.

3. Needles: You will need a variety of sewing needles for different fabrics and types of stitches. Sharp needles are best for woven fabrics, while ballpoint or jersey needles are better for knit fabrics. Use a heavier gauge needle for thicker fabrics, such as denim.

4. Fabric scissors: A good pair of fabric scissors is essential for cutting fabric. Use a dedicated pair of sci

ssors for fabric only, and keep them sharp to ensure clean cuts. Whatever you do, don't use your fabric scissors to cut paper. This will dull them with the quickness.

5. Seam ripper: Mistakes happen, and a seam ripper is a handy tool for removing stitches without damaging the fabric. It's best to run the seam ripper up in-between the layers of fabric rather than from the outer side, stitch by stitch.

6. Pins: Pins are used to hold fabric together while sewing. Choose long, thin pins with sharp points for best results. Fabric clips are also a great options for medium to heavy weight fabrics.

7. Pin cushion: A pin cushion is a small cushion used to store and organize your pins. It's important to have a safe place to store your pins, so they don't get lost or damage other items. I've grown fond of pin cushions that have magnets, such a life saver. Pin cushion bracelets are great too. You've got options!

8. Tape measure: A tape measure is used to take accurate measurements of fabric and of body measurements. Choose a flexible tape measure for ease of use.

9. Iron: An iron is important for pressing seams and fabric to create a polished finished product. Be sure to use a pressing cloth to protect delicate fabrics from the heat of the iron. Trust me it makes a world of difference when you press the seams throughout the process of your project.

10. Fabric Marking Tools: These tools include chalk, fabric markers, and dressmaker's pencils. They are used for marking fabric to indicate where to cut, sew, or hem. Be sure to do your research, some tools work better for certain fabrics versus others.

Before we say goodbye, let's recap. These are the basic supplies you will need for sewing. As you progress in your sewing skills, you may find you need additional supplies, but these are a great starting point. Remember to choose high-quality materials and tools, and don't be afraid to invest in items that will make your sewing experience more enjoyable and fulfilling. Happy sewing!
